Repainting a semi truck with custom color is a complex process involving detailed prep work, color matching, and application. The procedure starts by prepping every major component of the truck — sanding, cleaning, and masking. If your truck has dents or rust, technicians repair them to keep from showing through the new paint. After applying multiple coats of primer, the surface is sanded, also known as blocking, to smooth out imperfections. Using masking tape, lasers, and precise measurements, they lay out any custom designs, graphics, or lettering. Then, multiple coats of the custom color are applied, followed by a clear top coat for protection and shine. Finally, the paint is cured to achieve maximum durability and hardness.
The Challenge
The customer bought a new Kenworth Day Cab from us and needed it repainted to match his fleet. The design needed to match his existing trucks which consisted of a dual teal and gray color scheme with a stripe layout.
Our Solution
The customer provided our body shop with pictures of his existing trucks, for reference. After a few discussions, we were able to design the stripe layout to match his fleet.
The entire repainting process took place in our 60-foot paint booth which includes a bake oven. This powerful heating system is especially important for achieving a polished, durable coating. The full bake cycle hardens the paint, giving it a long-lasting finish built to withstand harsh road and weather conditions. The 2.7 million BTU heater provides a significant amount of heat to cure the paint quickly and evenly. Curing the paint with heat makes sure the top coat adheres to the truck’s exterior and prevents any peeling, chipping, or fading.
The Result
Our customer was satisfied with how the design layout turned out and the overall quality of the repaint. When he picked up his vehicle, he let us know that we exceeded his expectations in the short amount of time it took us to complete the job from start to finish.
