What is a Budget Semi Truck?

Budget Semi Trucks for Sale

A “budget semi truck” is a used commercial vehicle with a discounted purchase price based on its condition and history. Every commercial dealership prices their vehicles based on contributing factors which include configuration, features, engine hours and mileage.

Older Model Year

Trucks manufactured before the EPA’s 2007 pre-emissions standards implementation are often cheaper. That’s because they lack the modern emissions technology required in today’s semi trucks. So, any trucks prior to model year 2007 are much simpler mechanically. These trucks don’t include features like DPFs, SCR systems, electronic sensors, and other complex aftertreatment components now required by newer mandates. On the other hand, because of their simpler design, these trucks are popular for certain applications, such as heavy hauling.

Lower Price Tag

Used trucks are the most straightforward way to save since they’re a fraction of a new semi truck’s price. These trucks may sport high-mileage and simpler mechanics, but for a much lower investment, you can decrease your borrowing amount and financial risk while saving more capital. Remember: Lenders set interest rates based on the truck’s age, mileage, and the borrower’s background. Read more about financing cheap semi trucks.

Features

Trucks with fewer high-end or custom features will be more affordable. Used semi trucks equipped with basic transmission and standard interiors will sell for far less than those with updated features. Although, once you’ve purchased your truck, you can always add electronics and amenities that will boost the resale price.

Maintenance History

An older, well-maintained semi truck can be a better value than a slightly newer, neglected one. A full vehicle history report can show what potential future repairs you may run into if you were to purchase said vehicle. Plus, truck models with a reputation for dependability and readily available aftermarket parts are generally cheaper to maintain. It’s also helpful if the truck is easier to work on, as this reduces service hours and the total bill.

Price of a Budget Semi Truck

A budget semi truck refers to a lower-end, used model that is a fraction of the price of a new semi truck — which can cost over $250,000. For example, you can consider any used truck under $100,000 a budget truck. While that price tag is still incredibly hefty, it may be a well-maintained investment. On the other hand, some reliable older models or high-mileage trucks are priced as low as $20,000-$30,000.

You can find a used truck with a lower initial price, but it may require significant and expensive ongoing repairs just to stay road compliant and safe. Remember: The truck should carefully inspected before purchase. A full DOT or third-party mechanic inspection can reveal hidden issues you need to address.
