Kenworth Launches T880S Hood Option for Heavy Haul Applications

Kenworth has developed an updated T880 hood designed for high-horsepower vocational operations: the T880S Performance Hood. This improved design offers excellent durability, upgraded style features, and greater compatibility with high-performance engines.

The new T880S Performance Hood features a longer hood length and larger cooling module. Kenworth stated, “To support engine performance in all operating environments, the cooling module has been increased in size to 1,440 square inches and airflow optimized to maximize cooling efficiency.” (Source)  Compared to a T880 with a set-back front axle, this set-forward axle configuration increases the axle spread and outer bridge by 16 inches.

This upgrade makes it the first of the T880 models that’s compatible with the Cummins X15 engine rated up to 605 horsepower and 2,050 lb.-ft. of torque. “Standard T880S models continue to offer the PACCAR MX-13 engine, but the new Performance Hood opens the door to broader powertrain flexibility for customers pushing upper limits on payload and performance.” (Source)

T880S Hood Configuration

Like all T880 models, the T880S features a five-piece hood made from durable Metton materials. It’s made to handle tough conditions, and if damage does happen, repairs are simpler and quicker due to its design. This was intentional by Kenworth, to help reduce driver downtime and keep operating costs to a minimum.

Additionally, the Kenworth Performance Hood features a 121.7-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) and a 31.5-inch bumper setting with a standard bumper. These measurements help to optimize weight distribution as well as bridge law compliance.

As of April 2026, Kenworth has launched a new factory-installed reinforced front frame option for T880 models that simplifies upfits, lowers costs, and improves service time.
