Kenworth T880 – 2015 ATD Truck of the Year

by John Pospischil
Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck of the Year

The original T800 built a well-deserved reputation as a versatile, reliable workhorse. Kenworth has worked incredibly hard to continue and improve this reputation. Based on the popularity of the Kenworth T880, it is doing the job admirably.

We will take a quick look at some of the biggest improvements from the T800 and the T880!

Flexibility

As an all-around work horse, the T880 can be configured in a number of vocational and long haul configurations. If you’ve got a fleet that covers a lot of different roles, the T880 can be configured to address nearly all of them. You can streamline your parts needs and PM programs. The T880 comes standard with the new Paccar MX13 engine. However, trucks can be specified with a Cummins ISX if needed. Of course you can specify a wide variety of rears, transmissions and axles.

Visibility

One of the biggest improvements that drivers will appreciate is the wider and longer cab with better visibility! The cab is nearly 8 inches wider than the T800. It comes with a wide one-piece windshield that allows for increased visibility over the shorter and narrower hood. Speaking of the hood, the hood is sectioned into five pieces allowing you to change just the piece that has been damaged rather than the entire hood. This can save you a ton of time and money to service the routine damage that occurs in vocational uses. For example rather than replace an entire hood just replace the fender that got damaged!

Since the T880 shares the same cab and interior with the T680 you get the extra leg room and comfort with a better turning radius and more visibility with that 2.5 inch shorter hood. The instrument panel has been streamlined to be one sweeping surface rather than the two panels of the T800. The display is logically laid out and easy to read, if you’ve been driving a T800 or a T680 you will feel right at home in the cab. The road noise in the cab has been reduced considerably and the windows on the doors and rearview mirrors offer a more comprehensive view that will aid your drivers during drop and pick operations.

Drive a Kenworth T880

The T880 rides smoother and has more consistent power delivery than the T800 making those long days in the seat more productive and less frustrating.

If you are looking for a versatile, reliable truck that is also comfortable and looks great give the T880 a drive!

The Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck was recently named 2015 Truck of the Year by American Truck Dealers (ATD).  Click the links below to read more about it.

Kenworth T680

by John Pospischil
Kenworth T680

Looking for a fuel efficient truck with ultimate cab comfort? Look no further! The Kenworth T680 delivers on both fronts! First we will talk about fuel mileage. There are two ways the T680 works to get you more miles out of every dollar spent on fuel. First is aerodynamics. Everyone knows that drag can really drive down fuel economy.

Kenworth worked tirelessly to make the T680 the most aerodynamic tractor in their product line.

T680 Fuel Efficiency

Kenworth used skirts around the rear and top of the tractor to create an area for the trailer to draft in. Ths greatly reduces drag and improves fuel economy. Kenworth even developed mud flaps that are more aerodynamic!

The second thing that can save you money on fuel is reducing the weight of the tractor itself. The MX13 engine has a low center of gravity. Another innovation available on the T680, such as the Kenworth Idle Management System, can save a long haul OTR truck $3,000 to $4,000 per year in fuel costs by using a battery system to heat and cool the cab in all types of weather without the truck idling. This system has a small footprint, is easy to use and does not eat into storage space under the bunk. Combine this with super singles, Eaton Fuller Automatic Transmissions and the 2×4 drive system, which will alone save 600lbs of weight from your tractor and the fuel savings pile up quickly!

Kenworth Cab Comfort

We all know how challenging it can be to be in the seat. Have you ever gotten in a cab and just been unable to get into a good driving position or you find yourself forever messing with the HVAC controls? The Kenworth T680 can make your life easier on both counts.

The Kenworth T680 offers a 40% reduction in road noise inside the cab, giving you a more quite environment so that you can keep your focus on the road, in addition the folks at Kenworth worked hard to make sure that anyone could find a comfortable driving position by offering a slew of adjustable features and an ergonomic, driver friendly environment.

The T680 has an automatic climate control system available; simply pick a temperature that you are comfortable with and the T680 does the rest! The filters are easy to get to for maintenance and the system is reliable and efficient.

These are just as few of the reasons many of our customers prefer the T680. We’re sure that if you take a look at the T680 you will find a reason to love one too. For more information contact https://www.coopskw.com/.

Paccar MX-13 Engine

by John Pospischil

Most folks don’t realize this but Paccar has been building diesel engines since 1956 and was one the first to put a turbo on a diesel engine in 1959. All of this experience and expertise came to play when Paccar designed and introduced their latest engine: the MX-13.

MX-13

Paccar MX-13 Engine

The MX-13 offers many innovations that can help everyone from large fleets to an independent owner-operator save time, save money and stay on the road. We are going to take a look at a couple of specific things that in our experience makes the MX-13 a great engine.

Everyone knows that weight is the enemy, all that weight drives up fuel costs and increases braking distances and extra weight in the engine is less weight for your load! Paccar MX-13 Engines are lightweight. Two of the weight-saving features stand out:

Key Features

The first is the cam shaft. The Paccar MX-13 features a single camshaft positioned low in the block to help reduce engine noise and to help keep the overall size of the MX-13 smaller. In addition, using a single high strength steel camshaft reduces weight considerably and the overall complexity of the engine.

The Compacted Graphite Iron used in the block and cylinder heads is an interesting feature. Compacted Graphite Iron adds higher tensile strength and better resists the heat of the modern diesel engine.  Compacted Graphite Iron is 75% stronger and stiffer than grey iron AND lighter! All this adds up to fuel savings and less weight, in short, the Paccar MX-13 offers an excellent power to weight ratio.

The other innovation that we have found folks love is the Integral Engine Brake, this unique cam actuated design produces excellent performance without the noise, complexity and added engine height and weight of other systems.

These are just a few of the features we have found to be excellent reasons to choose a Paccar MX-13 in your new trucks, at the end of the day it will save you time, money and keep you on the road!

TRP Truck Batteries

by John Pospischil
TRP batteries

The TRP Truck Batteries manufacturing facility is located near Kutztown, PA. We were taken through the entire production process for a variety of batteries. Admittedly, I never spent a lot of time thinking about batteries until it was time to replace one. When stuck on the side of a road, a battery suddenly becomes high priority.

Taking the tour answered some questions I never knew I had. It changed my mind about some of the things I thought I knew about Group 31 batteries.

Here are the three takeaways from my tour:

  1. Very few people use the right battery for the job. Increasingly, our trucks are pulling more and more power from electrical systems. Basic Starting Batteries can fail in extreme temperatures and don’t last as long as you think they should. They aren’t built to run everything in a truck and start your truck. They are built to start your truck and slowly recharge. There really is a difference, beyond price, between a Starting Battery and a Dual Purpose Deep Cycle Battery. The first rule is to choose the right type of group 31 battery for what you do with your truck.
  2. AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) Batteries provide better longevity and power in high stress environments. AGM batteries don’t spill. They also handle vibrations and rough roads better than traditional batteries. AGM batteries offer better, deeper cycling which gives you a longer-lasting battery. If you run off road, land fields, quarries or other harsh environments and AGM Battery can reduce down times and the number of batteries you change.
  3. Price isn’t everything! Doesn’t it always seem that batteries fail right when you need them most or they are the hardest to replace. Who wants to pay for a road call to replace a battery?

Who wants to run around at 7:30 pm on a holiday weekend looking for a battery that you are going to install in the dark, when it is cold and snowing? TRP batteries have several features that help them last longer and have a more predictable lifespan. For example, most bargain batteries don’t have a full frame around the grids. TRP Batteries feature a full-framed grid secured to the top and the bottom of the battery box. The grid also has a pattern to provide efficient electron flow. The TRP Battery design prevents grids from rubbing through and shorting out. This is the number one way that cells go dead in bargain batteries.

So, the big takeaways are:

  1. Pick the right battery for the job
  2. Get an AGM if you run in rougher environments
  3. Lastly, cheaper isn’t always a better value!
