Benefits of Buying Pre-Owned Commercial Vehicles

by John Pospischil
Pre-Owned Kenworth Trucks

Buying a commercial truck can be a big investment. One way to soften the blow is to look into purchasing pre-owned commercial vehicles. The inventory of trucks at Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth in NJ has both new and used vehicles. The used lineup includes everything from daycabs and box trucks to dump, refuse, tanker and sleeper trucks. Before you buy any used truck, you should take into account the benefits and cautions of buying pre-owned commercial vehicles. It’s important to take a good hard look at your potential purchase.

Benefits of Buying a Used Commercial Truck

The primary benefit of buying a pre-owned commercial truck is the cost savings. In addition, you may be able to afford a top brand you wouldn’t be able to if it were new. Another perk is the lower rate of depreciation. Like cars, once you drive a new truck off the lot, you instantly lose about 20% of its value.  Depending upon the age of the vehicle, you may still be able to get the benefits of newer technology and better fuel economy as well.

Cautions of Buying a Used Commercial Truck

You can easily limit the downside of purchasing a pre-owned truck, but you have to know what the cautions are beforehand. One of the biggest issues is that commercial trucks are work trucks, which means it isn’t always easy to find one in excellent condition. Luckily, with a good visual and mechanical inspection, you can quickly learn whether a used commercial truck has been taken care of or not. Also, remember that the older the vehicle, it is less likely to come with the latest technology and highest fuel efficiency.

Information You’ll Need Before Buying a Used Truck

When debating the benefits & cautions of buying pre-owned commercial vehicles, the best weapon at your disposal is information. Before you purchase a used truck, gather every piece of information you can. Ask for a detailed history, including accidents, maintenance and repairs. Find out what the truck was used for and if it was altered or converted in any way. You should know the mileage and how it was accumulated; freeway miles are less damaging than constant stop-and-go.  Inspect any truck you’re interested in carefully, paying close attention to frames, springs and suspension. Look for cracks and rust as well. Ask for a demonstration of all the systems to see if they are working properly, and if there’s an electronic control unit, use it to get a wealth of helpful information. The electronic control units are typically on the newer models. You’ll need to drive the vehicle before making a final decision. When you drive, listen and feel for any issues, and see if the truck is comfortable for you.

You’ll also need to keep in mind what your intended use for this truck is. Based upon that, ask yourself if does it need to be pristine, or if looks secondary to performance? List out must-have features like horsepower, axle ratio and whether you prefer manual or automatic transmission. The more you can provide the salesperson, the better chance you have at finding the right used commercial truck for you.

The History of Kenworth Day Cab Trucks

by John Pospischil
Kenworth Day Cabs

The first truck in America was 1899’s Autocar delivery wagon. Maximum load was 700 pounds. The wagon came with your choice of a five or eight horsepower motor. It was also America’s first Day Cab. It lacked most of the comforts drivers have come to expect from today’s models.

From those early beginnings, day cabs have dramatically improved in comfort and features. Today’s day cabs help put the mileage on the truck, not the driver. If we could thumb through the sales ads of yesterday, what would we see?

1923: Daycab Trucks for Sale

Kenworth’s 1923 models continued the nearly unbroken streak of driver discomfort. An open cab, bench seat and sparse dashboard meant the day cab was all business. It was a truck as rugged as the men who drove it. Drivers expected to be getting in and out of the doorless cab all day long.

1961: Kenworth Day Cab Trucks

The single driver’s seat and riveted panel dashboard of a 1961 Kenworth Cab Beside Engine (CBE) hardly spelled driver comfort. The visibility was great, but if a driver spent any time looking inside the cab for soft touches, he was sadly disappointed. Sharp metal edges were exposed, no seat belt was available, and the driver had only a handful of gauges offering limited information.

Today: Kenworth T880 Day Cab Trucks for Sale

Traditionally, sleeper cabs have had more luxurious cab interiors than day cabs. However, day cab operators still need to have critical information at their fingertips. Kenworth’s T880 daycab does not disappoint.

From the leather-wrapped Smart Wheel® multifunction steering wheel, with controls right under the driver’s fingertips, to high-definition instrumentation, this daycab interior respects the driver’s intelligence.

Virtual gauges are highly visible no matter the time of day or lighting conditions. Kenworth’s innovative NavPlus® – a revolutionary driver interface – brings together vehicle navigation, entertainment, diagnostics, and cutting-edge communication into one intuitive full-color touchscreen.

Bucket seats embrace the driver, reducing wear and tear on spine and legs. Plenty of padding, soft edges and cushioning make a day behind the wheel of a Kenworth T880 hardly feel like work.

Consider UltraShift Transmissions in Kenworth Dump Trucks

by John Pospischil
UltraShift Transmission

UltraShift Transmissions

Transmission technology continues to evolve to support a more flexible range of applications for dump truck operators. Operators searching for Kenworth dump trucks are now considering vehicles equipped with UltraShift transmissions for long-term operational demands. It’s important to understand the benefits that this transmission style brings. Within this post, we’ll look at the suitable applications for UltraShift transmission trucks.

Steep Grade Environments

The use of the UltraShift transmission in a new truck enables drivers to pay closer attention to their vehicle’s trailer and driving techniques. Less time is wasted focusing on shifting gears on the road. The system includes features such as HillStart Aid, which helps prevent the truck from rolling backwards while starting on a steep grade. This helps to prevent accidents on the road. It allows drivers to focus on traffic and road conditions when pulling out, instead of worrying about drifting backwards!

Off-Road Conditions

Due to the superior performance of UltraShift transmissions, drivers will benefit from greater vehicle control in off-road conditions. The system features two-speed axle software for enhanced gear reduction. Drivers now have better control of vehicle movement when conditions would be unsuitable for other vehicles.

Long-Haul Driving

For long-haul driving needs, the UltraShift transmission offers a higher level of fuel efficiency. It provides 23% greater fuel economy over comparable automatic transmission systems. This helps operators reduce their fleet operating costs while retaining reliability and performance over the long-term.

The UltraShift Transmission is helping support enhanced productivity for dump truck fleets.

Daycab Innovations

by John Pospischil

Trucking operators require that their daycabs feature the highest levels of comfort on the road. A comfortable driver is more productive and better able to focus on safety and job performance. Driver comfort translates to driver retention! For this reason, fleet operators across the country are reviewing the latest daycab trucks for sale and paying close attention to the latest daycab innovations. To help operators understand these improvements, this article will focus on three of the recent innovations.

Spacious Interior

Kenworth designs daycabs with such superior interior quality they make drivers forget they are actually working. The interior of the new T880 features an extremely spacious and quiet, state-of-the-art control center. The new design comfortably accommodates any driver, regardless of their size. This spacious cab size helps drivers rest comfortably while driving and helps minimize stress placed on their backs and spines from having to hunch down.

Easy-to-Reach Controls

The driver controls within the vehicle are also now closer to the driver’s seat. This helps to minimize stretching-related injuries and gives drivers a greater degree of vehicle control. The center console of the T880 vehicle has been fitted with two 12-volt outlets to safely and simply store and charge cell phones and other electronic devices during the journey.

Sound Protection

Each element of the T880’s design is driver-focused. Take, for example, the placement of the air conditioning system and heater motors. These are mounted on the firewall to minimize the noise in the cabin and allow for a more peaceful driving experience.

Operators can make more effective choices for their long-term fleet needs by learning more about the latest daycab innovations.
