Aftertreatment Maintenance

by John Pospischil

Over the past few decades, the Environmental Protection Agency has implemented emissions regulations for heavy-duty diesel engines. The EPA’s regulations apply to both on-highway and vocational trucks. These standards are positive and have lowered emissions. However, the engine aftertreatment systems (EATS) now mandatory in all new vehicles bring their own set of unique challenges. When it comes to overall efficiency and total cost of ownership, proper aftertreatment maintenance is crucial.

Aftertreatment Truck Maintenance

The Eats (Engine Aftertreatment Systems) Trade-Off

The latest category of heavy-duty engine oils were specifically designed to protect this latest generation of engines, but oil technology has not advanced far enough when it comes to optimizing and protecting the aftertreatment system, especially with regards to the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Consequently, fleet owners and operations managers have been forced to make a trade-off—one that requires more fuel.

How DPFs Increase Fuel Consumption

DPF Regeneration Cycles

Once enough soot and ash accumulate, the engine initiates a process where extremely high temperatures
burn off the collected particles to regenerate the DPF. Regen cycles can be passive or active and both require additional fuel to run, decreasing fuel economy.

What’s Actually Happening?

DPFs play a crucial role in cleaning diesel exhaust before it hits the tailpipe, reducing emissions of
particulate matter (PM). As fuel burns, the DPF collects and stores up to 98% of incombustible particles in
the form of ash and soot.

Ash Clogging in the DPF

Soot burns off through regeneration, but ash remains in the DPF. Engine lubricants contain metallic
additives, such as anti-wear and detergents, which clog the DPF and create backpressure. On top of
regeneration cycles, this backpressure puts additional strain on the engine, causing a significant
increase in fuel consumption.

Aftertreatment Maintenance Solution

Delo 600 ADF with OMNIMAX™ Technology solves the issue
of ash buildup in the diesel particulate filter while providing outstanding engine protection. By producing 60% less ash compared to today’s low-ash engine oils, Delo 600 ADF drastically reduces the rate of DPF clogging to increase fuel economy retention by up to 3%, and keep your vehicles running stronger, longer.

KENWORTH T680 NEXT GEN

by John Pospischil
Kenworth T680 Next Gen

Exterior Upgrades for Maximum Fuel Economy

T680 enthusiasts will certainly not be disappointed with the 2021 Kenworth T680 Next Generation. Maintaining the classic T680 appearance, the newest upgrades are subtle in appearance, but substantial in fuel economy.

Upgraded fairings, vented fenders, low ground clearance, a new aerodynamic bumper, and a narrower hood provide for minimal turbulence. Kenworth is touting a 6% fuel economy increase compared to previous models. That equals money in the bank!

The addition of 28-inch side extender fairings on the back of the sleeper drastically reduces the potential for airflow between the sleeper and the trailer. This creates less opportunity for drag. The chassis and trailer are both accessible, thanks to hinged fairings that can be opened and moved out of the way.

One of many aesthetic improvements to the new T680’s are the vertical LED side turn indicators on the back of the fenders. This not only looks sleek but ensures other drivers can see when the truck is turning or switching lanes.

More About the Kenworth T680

Kenworth took the extra time needed to ensure the T680 was designed with the driver in mind. Take a look at the Kenworth T680 features:

Cab

Like every truck, the experience for the driver starts with the design of the cab. Kenworth gathered more than 800 professional truck drivers to get a hands-on evaluation of cab preferences and needs. Then, a design concept was born, resulting in a fully modernized 83-inch wide cab. Coupled with Kenworth’s high standards for interior finish and features, the T680 is truly a driver-centric truck. Overall, the T680 offers more storage and a larger windshield than most trucks on the road. Additionally, the T680 is one of the quietest rides available in a Class 8 truck. The cab is available as a day cab or in one of several sleeper options. Dozens of interior options are available as well, so you can equip your T680 to be fully loaded or as simplistic as one desires.

Body

Outside the cab, Kenworth focused on aerodynamics, resulting in the most aerodynamic truck in their model lineup. It features a highly sloped hood, with excellent visibility, industry best forward lighting, and sculpted body lines for that aerodynamic profile.

Power

Under the hood, the T680 can be equipped with a wide variety of engine options. Two engines are available from PACCAR: The MX-11 and MX-13. The MX-11 is new to the market and offers lighter duty performance compared to the more powerful MX-13. However, the MX-11 is much lighter and more efficient than the MX-13; ideal for long hauls. Two Cummins ISX engines are also available. Each engine is available with several automated transmissions or two manual transmissions.

With the T680, Kenworth has made a Class 8 truck that is perfectly suited for the driver. To learn more, contact the team at Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth.

Certified Technicians for Complex Truck Repairs

by John Pospischil
Certified Technicians for Complex Truck Repairs

It’s no secret to fleet owners and fleet maintenance managers that there are two types of truck repairs: quick… and not-so-quick. While fluid top-offs and brake repairs are routine jobs for most technicians, other jobs require more hours and specialized training, especially across multiple manufacturers. When weighing the costs of training and additional tools, it comes as no surprise that many fleet owners are outsourcing complex repair jobs. They’re relying on service centers with certified technicians on hand.

Commercial Truck Repairs

A fleet survey conducted by the S.5 Fleet Maintenance Management Study Group in early 2019 cited clutch assembly repairs and exhaust gas re-circulation cooler repairs as two of the biggest time consumers.

Over the years, the number of hours required for clutch assembly repairs has increased as trucks become more advanced and include more components. Accessing the parts in need of repair takes longer, as technicians encounter more obstacles to work around. EGR coolers are also cited by fleet maintenance managers as being difficult to diagnose and, typically, a time-consuming repair.

Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth recommends preventive maintenance as the best way to avoid and decrease the cost of these repairs. Keeping a close eye on fluid levels, filter flow, wire and terminal conditions, and related repairs can greatly decrease the frequency and magnitude of failures. However, wear and tear is inevitable, and parts can eventually fail.  When it’s time to outsource those big repair jobs, a reputable service team is standing by to help.

Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth – A Winning Team

Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth has Cummins Certified and Paccar Certified Technicians on-hand, ready to diagnose and repair your truck. The dealership consists of two locations, conveniently located near major highways in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
