Kenworth Trucks: A Smart Investment

by John Pospischil
Invest in Kenworth Trucks

There’s no doubt that buying a heavy-duty Class 8 truck is a major investment – so why pay more than you have to?  If you’re looking for a great value, the real bargains are on used Kenworth trucks.  A used Kenworth is often going to still be as good as new model from other brands – while costing tens of thousands of dollars less.

Some smart shopping can mean great ROI on your investment, lower monthly payments, or possibly even paying for it in cash up-front to avoid the interest charges.

Kenworth Trucks are Worth the Money

  • Superior Fuel Efficiency

Kenworth is a subsidiary of PACCAR, and so Kenworth trucks get first access to the latest in PACCAR fuel-efficient engines and related components like the transmission.  PACCAR is well known for producing engines which are lightweight without compromising on power, meaning that a Kenworth that’s a few years old may still have more cost-effective engine than the competition.

In particular, the Kenworth T680 line is designed specifically for fuel efficiency, making used T680s possibly the best value in Class 8 trucking.

  • State-of-the-Art Computer Systems

Kenworth has also been a pioneer in integrating computerization in their trucks, making this another area where a used Kenworth can be as good or better than the competition.  Kenworth’s feature onboard computers monitoring every aspect of the truck’s performance, alerting the driver with specifics if any trouble arises.  They also utilize mobile communications to coordinate with fleet managers and, if necessary, nearby Kenworth repair shops to minimize downtime from on-road repairs.

  • Great Sleeper Cabins

Kenworth’s are a favorite among long-haul truckers due to their superior cabins.  They’re surprisingly spacious, and larger models have plenty of room to stand up and stretch.  They also have space for a wide range of amenities such as refrigerators, small ovens, TVs, gaming consoles, and more.    Used Kenworth trucks are a home away from home.

  • The Iconic W900

If you’re an owner-operator or aspire to be one, there’s a good chance you have your eye on only one model:  the legendary W900.  W900s change very little over the years (why mess with perfection) so a used W900 could be the perfect way to achieve your goal and get the independent rig you’ve always wanted.

Understanding Your Options in Dump Trucks

by John Pospischil
Kenworth Dump Trucks

When you’re looking for dump trucks, you have plenty of options.  The right dump truck can be an invaluable addition to your fleet. Dump trucks are a genuinely multi-purpose vehicle which can see many years of use in different roles.  It’s one of the most versatile hauling vehicles you can own.

That is if you get the right truck for your needs. There are a lot of different dump trucks for sale in PA, so understanding your options will help you make smart purchases.

The Major Types of Dump Trucks

  1. Standard Dump Trucks

The most typical dump truck configuration has the dump box attached directly to the truck’s frame. They usually feature either three or four total axles with only one steering axle.  Besides being the best “all around” type of dump truck, these offer superior maneuverability which can be vital for smaller job sites.

  1. Off-Road Dump Trucks

Off-road dump trucks are generally articulated, featuring large heavy-duty wheels and improved suspension capable of handling off-road work and muddy conditions.  These are usually limited in their load size, to optimize their ability to maneuver off-road, and so are only suitable for fleets where a lot of off-road work will be required.

  1. Trailer Dump Trucks

Another alternative is getting a standard tractor-trailer cab, then adding a dump trailer.  This brings the benefit of larger load sizes, but with a significant loss of speed and maneuverability.  Of course, in this configuration, the cab is available for other jobs as well.

  1. Transfer Dump Trucks

Transfer dumpers combine standard and trailer types.  That is, it’s a standard attached dump truck which is also towing a dump trailer.  This configuration is more expensive but does a good job optimizing both load size and maneuverability.  However, you will need to do some research on which state(s) you’ll be operating in, and how they regulate dump truck loads and axles.

  1. Side Dump Trucks

Typical dump trucks have hydraulic lifts that boost the front end, so materials fall out the back.  Side dumpers instead rotate in-place, emptying their contents to the side.  This method reduces several major safety risks, but with some drawbacks: side dumpers require a lot of space, and usually have lower maximum load sizes.

Purchasing Dump Trucks: 4 Tips

by John Pospischil

If you’re looking for dump trucks for sale in NJ, there are plenty to choose from – both new and used.  With some careful shopping, you can find a great deal that will deliver superior ROI for years to come.  However, there are some key considerations that should be made before buying.

Dump Truck Purchasing Tips

Four Useful Tips for Choosing the Right Dump Trucks for Sale In NJ

1 – Decide on your optimal capacity beforehand

How big are the loads you’re likely to be hauling?  This is critical to know before you start shopping because you’re going to want a dump truck which is as small as possible while still fitting your needs.  The larger the truck, the more expensive it will be to maintain and run on-road.  Plus, larger trucks can have issues navigating in tight work areas.

So, plan your purchase around your needed capacity.

Relatedly…

2 – Decide if you want a steel or aluminum body

The dump box will almost always be made of either steel or aluminum, and this is an important choice.  Steel is stronger than aluminum and -in particular- more able to stand up to the impacts from large heavy pieces of debris.  However, it’s also significantly heavier than aluminum and that will impact your operating costs, as well as your maximum load weights.

Aluminum is usually more cost-effective, but only if your loads don’t require the strength of steel.

3 – Do you need extra tool storage?

If you’re going to be regularly hauling around sets of tools for your workers, you can get dump trucks with toolboxes included.  This will be much better than storing tools in the cab or the dump box itself.  However, if you don’t need tool storage, tool boxes will just unnecessarily add to its operating weight.

4 – Does the truck come with a mesh tarp built-in?

The majority of states in the US require dump trucks to include a mesh tarp for securing small debris.  In fact, out of the entire eastern seaboard, only Maine, New Jersey, and Delaware don’t require tarps.  So, if you plan on ever taking your dump truck out of NJ, you will almost certainly need a tarp installed to avoid legal hassles.

Kenworth T680 Predictive Cruise Control

by John Pospischil
Kenworth T680

If you’re looking for commercial trucks, you’ve got more reason than ever to seriously consider the award-winning Kenworth T680.  The T680 is one of Kenworth’s flagship Class 8 trucks and a showcase of how modern engineering as well as computer integration can reduce on-road costs.

The dedication to innovation has been leveled up. Beginning July 2018, predictive cruise control is now standard on T680s – making the most cost-effective Class 8 truck an even better value!

Predictive Cruise Makes the Kenworth T680 a Great Option Among Commercial Trucks

What is predictive cruise?  Simply put, it takes input from the GPS as well as internal maps to make for a smarter version of cruise control.  Predictive cruise can make many of the same fuel-saving choices a driver might make, such as coasting down hills, and only accelerating when absolutely needed.  This also allows it to make much smarter use of braking. As well as being able to utilize a wider range of speeds to avoid unnecessary fuel use.

It’s a complete leap beyond standard “dumb” cruise control that just mindlessly targets a single speed without taking the road topography into account.  Kenworth’s system is actually looking a full mile ahead, planning its fuel use the entire way!

According to Kenworth, this allows predictive cruise to save up to 2% in fuel costs, particularly in hilly areas.

Of course, that’s not the only way a T680 saves on fuel.  Its body was computer-designed to be as aerodynamic as possible.  Literally, every exposed surface on the truck has been specifically engineered to reduce drag and encourage smooth airflow.  The T680 doesn’t merely look sleek, it rides as smooth as it looks.

On top of that, the Kenworth T680 comes standard with PACCAR engine. PACCAR is well known for their progress in creating lightweight engines and other critical systems which don’t compromise on power.  When the T680 has a PACCAR engine, drive train, and transmission, the cost savings go up further.

All this adds up to a truck which is the most fuel-efficient Class 8 vehicle currently on the roads today.  If your fleet needs a truck with the lowest possible on-road costs, the new 2019 T680s are your best option.

Dump Truck Driving: Benefits and Drawbacks

by John Pospischil

After a new truck driver has gotten their heavy equipment licenses, they often wonder what field of trucking they should get into.  One option which is sometimes overlooked is driving dump trucks.  There are a lot of benefits to owning and running a dump truck.

Still, it’s a career path that’s well worth considering.

The Benefits of Driving Dump Trucks

1 – Stay local

For many dump truck drivers, the biggest benefit is that their work will almost always be local to their area and rarely even go out-of-state.  For drivers with families, this is a major plus.  They’ll rarely have to stay overnight away from home, and much of the time, they’ll even be home for dinner!

2 – Good pay

Despite not involving as much mileage as a medium- or long-haul trucker, dump trucking still pays quite well.  The median pay is over $40,000, which is above the overall median salary in the US.  And pay increases with experience!

3 – Plenty of opportunities

Construction is booming, and wherever there’s construction, there’s need for dump trucks.  Plenty of other opportunities come up as well.  You can become an on-call solution for a lot of employers around your area.

That is if it’s the right time of year…

The Drawbacks of Dump Trucks

1 – Seasonal work

Dump truck work is rarely steady.  Work peaks in the summer, with ramp-up in the spring and wind-down in the fall.  Work can be downright hard to find in the winter.  This means you’ll either need a fallback job or do good financial planning to deal with off-season downtime.

2 – Boredom

The other major issue with being a dump truck driver is how repetitive the work can be.  When you sign on with a company, there’s a good chance you’ll be making the exact same runs, day after day – almost like driving civilian buses.  Some drivers can’t cope with this and will want more variety in their driving.
