Commercial Truck Purchase Options with Bad Credit

by John Pospischil
Commercial Truck Purchase Options with Bad Credit

For many truck drivers, the dream is to walk onto a lot full of semi-trucks for sale and drive off with their very own personal rig. No more working for other people! Being an independent owner-operator means a life of freedom – choosing your own jobs and driving wherever you like. Given the cost of semi-trucks, commercial truck purchase options can be limited. However, that doesn’t mean there’s no hope! There are several ways to improve chances of being approved for a new truck loan.

What to Do If You Want A Truck, But Have Bad Credit

1 – Plan ahead

Just about any attempt to repair your credit will take anywhere between 6-12 months to pull off.  If you’re thinking about going independent, now is the time to investigate your credit and your options.

2 – Get your credit report

Every American is entitled to one free credit report per year, so get yours.  You don’t want any surprises at the dealership.

3 – Look for items you can dispute

Are there any false entries in your credit report, or items you’ve paid off but aren’t shown as paid off?  Dispute those items with the major credit-tracking companies! When creditors can’t produce documentation justifying the credit items, they’ll usually be removed from your report.

4 – Pay off anything you can afford

Are there any debts which would be cheap to pay off?  Make them go away ASAP.  The longer they’re gone from your credit record before attempting a major purchase, the better your credit will look.

5 – Consider credit consolidation

In some cases, you could potentially get one single loan which pays off all the smaller loans and outstanding items on your credit report.  This is often a very good idea – particularly if you establish a history of on-time payments to the new lender.

6 – Talk to your dealership

If you know your credit is iffy, be upfront about it with your dealership.  Sometimes they have special programs you can take advantage of if you give them a head’s up.

7 – Consider buying used

Used semi-trucks for sale can still be a great value, and far less expensive than buying new.  Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth has both new and used trucks, so contact us for more information on trucks and credit options!

Kenworth Dump Trucks vs. Dump Trailers

by John Pospischil

If you have a need to haul materials around, or dispose of waste, a dumper of some sort is called for.  But what type should you get?  You could choose to buy one of our Kenworth dump trucks for sale, or you could simply get a dump trailer and attach it to one of your existing semis.

Is it worth investing in a dedicated dumper?  Here’s a brief breakdown of the positives and negatives.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Dump Trucks vs Dump Trailers

  1. Benefits

The biggest single benefit to standalone dump trucks is their maneuverability.  They are significantly smaller than a full rig + trailer, which makes them a much better choice for tight construction zones – such as those in residential areas.  In addition, they will generally have better off-road performance compared to a trailer if you need to head into dirt and mud.

That maneuverability also translates into increased flexibility in deployment and usage.  You may find that you have more uses for your dedicated dump truck than you thought!

Finally, dump trucks are easier to finance.  Many lenders are hesitant to back purchases of add-ons, such as trailers, which can make procurement difficult in some situations.

  1. Drawbacks

The big drawback to dedicated dump trucks is the price.  If you already have an existing big rig, you can add a dump trailer to it for a lot less money.

Another issue is capacity.  In general, a dump trailer will be able to hold and haul more material than a dedicated dumper.  Of course, that also depends in large part on the size and power of your existing rigs.  Do you already own a truck capable of pulling a fully-loaded dump trailer?

Finally, in some cases, a dump trailer can be easier to store.  Since it’s detachable, it can often be left at work sites when the day is done, leaving you with a much smaller rig-to-housetrip.

Financing Dump Trucks: Benefits and More

by John Pospischil
Financing Dump Trucks

If your operation is looking to invest in more dump trucks, you’ve got a lot of decisions to make.  One of the biggest is how you’re going to pay for it.  Even if your company has the capital to buy your dump trucks outright, there are significant benefits to financing can often outweigh the interest costs.  In fact, some 70% of our customers choose to finance their trucks – including those who could have purchased it outright.

These are some of the biggest reasons we see Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth customers choose financing when they’re buying dump trucks.

Four Reasons Financing Your Dump Trucks Can Make Sense

1. Low-interest rates

If you technically have the cash-on-hand to buy the truck outright, a bank has little reason to worry about you making your payments.  You’ll get highly favorable rates that minimize your extra costs.

2. Preserving working capital

Just because you could buy outright, that doesn’t mean you necessarily want to suddenly lose access to $100,000-$200,000 in capital.  That’s a big chunk of money that might be better kept in the bank, as a hedge against emergencies or to pay for ongoing maintenance.

3. Get upgrades up-front

If you’re looking to finance your truck, that potentially allows you to get more truck for your money from the outset.  Upgrade your vehicle with optional extras such as a larger engine, custom livery, and a comfortable cab for your drivers. If your budget allows, these added features will enhance your driving experience.

4. Better expense planning

Since your payments are going to be regular, that makes it easier to predict the expenses involved with owning and operating your dump truck for the first few years.  For many operations, this is a major benefit in terms of long-term planning.

5. Tax benefits : Deductions based on Lease / Loan

The tax advantages are different for each.  People who choose a lease can claim their payment as a deduction. People who finance traditionally (with a loan) can claim the interest and depreciation of value as a deduction.

As the price goes up on the vehicle, leasing usually becomes more preferable. But don’t forget: if you purchased the vehicle, you can also deduct the interest on the vehicle’s loan based on the percentage of business use. We offer both forms of financing here.

Five Fascinating Fast Facts About Semi Trucks

by John Pospischil
Semi Trucks Facts

The history of semi-trucks goes back almost to the dawn of the automobile.  The moment someone had a working internal combustion engine, someone else was thinking about how to harness it to ship goods around.  In that time, there’s been plenty of change and innovation in trucking – something we’re proud to have been a part of, offering semi-trucks for sale here at Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth.

So today, just for fun, let’s just have a quick list of factoids about trucks and the history of trucking.

Five Things You Might Not Have Known About Semi Trucks and Trucking

1. The first “semi-truck” was invented in 1898.

In 1897, Alexander Winton founded the Winton Motor Carriage Company, one of the first dedicated automotive manufacturers in America.  Just a year later, he rolled out what’s commonly considered the first heavy-duty truck specifically for the shipment of goods.   In fact, it was a car-hauler, so that his customers could receive their cars in mint condition!

Winton was a pioneer in early American automotive who is rarely discussed.  He was also an avid race-car builder, and even raced Henry Ford in 1901.  But Ford won.

2. The “semi” in semi-truck refers to the trailer.

A lot of people don’t actually know where the “semi” comes from.  That’s actually the trailer, and it’s called a “semi” because it lacks front wheels and is therefore totally dependent on the truck hauling it.

3. Grinding lots of gears.

The maximum number of gears that a truck transmission can have is actually eighteen!  However, the most common setup is twelve – ten forward gears, and two for reversing.

4. The “fifth wheel” isn’t unnecessary at all!

In common usage, calling someone a “fifth wheel” suggests that they’re useless or extraneous in a gathering.  However, fifth wheel is actually a trucking term – it’s part of the coupling which holds the trailer in place.  So, a fifth wheel is a highly vital component!

And speaking of trucking terms that became slang…

5. All hail the kingpin.

A “kingpin” isn’t just a mob boss – it’s actually large pin that goes through the fifth wheel and anchors the coupling in place.  (Someone should tell that to Daredevil.)

How A Kenworth T880 Dump Truck Can Improve Productivity

by John Pospischil
T880 DUMP TRUCK

Why should you choose a Kenworth T880 dump truck to add to your fleet?

Well, while we might be biased from spending over thirty years selling Kenworth’s, we honestly agree with their slogan that they are “The World’s Best” trucks.  In our view, no other brand of dump trucks (or any other truck) on the market hits such a great balance between price, performance, comfort, and operating costs.  Their extreme configurability is another big plus, since you can get the perfect Kenworth T880 dump truck for your own needs.

If you’re looking at dump trucks, here are just a few reasons we’d suggest looking into T880s.

4 Big Benefits to Choosing a Kenworth T880 Dump Truck

1 – Solid gas mileage

A dump truck is never going to be exactly eco-friendly, but Kenworth has long placed a premium on offering better gas mileage than their competitors.  A well-spec’ed T880 can easily top 7MPG while fully loaded, or potentially even more.  It’s all about picking the right truck for your needs, and not getting an engine that’s bigger than necessary.

Speaking of which…

2 – A wide selection of engines

Another great thing about Kenworth T880s is that you have so many customizable options, including your choice of either PACCAR or Cummins engines.  You can get either with a wide range of HP and torque options.  Your Kenworth dealer can help you pick the right engine specs to maximize your fuel efficiency.

3 – A lift axle adds versatility

Many dump trucks force you to choose between tandem axles and their superior maneuverability, or the extra weight tri-axles can take.  Kenworth T880s let you have both!  A solid, well-engineered lift axle allows you to reconfigure the truck as necessary, depending on the job you’re doing.

4 – Keep your drivers happy with a comfortable ride

Few truck manufacturers go the extra mile on interiors and sleeper cabs like Kenworth.  They recognize that great engineering may be wasted, if the driver is uncomfortable or has difficulty operating the machine.  Kenworth cabs are designed for pure ergonomics. Their sleepers are easily a home-away-from home – potentially cutting down on hotel expenses!

Not convinced?  Test-drive a Kenworth T880 dump truck for yourself by visiting Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth!
