Predictive Cruise Control: T880 and T680 Trucks

by jsarasota
Kenworth Cruise Control

Cruise Control can spark heated discussions in trucking circles. Particularly when those discussions are between a driver and their fleet manager.  Drivers love cruise control because it can make their jobs much easier and more comfortable, particularly on extended drives across multiple states.  Fleet managers dislike cruise because it’s almost always less fuel efficient than active driving with an eye towards fuel conservation.

Kenworth is well aware of these issues and with optimization being such a priority in their truck design, they have set about trying to find solutions that fit everyone.  The result is their Predictive Cruise Control system, which is seen in both T880 and T680 Kenworth models.  Predictive Cruise recently got a major upgrade, and it’s better than ever!

Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth takes a look.

What Is Predictive Cruise Control?

Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) is a proprietary Kenworth system that’s intended to greatly reduce the amount of extra fuel that traditional cruise systems generally require.  This is accomplished by making the cruise control smarter.

On T880 and T680 Kenworth trucks, the Predictive Cruise Control system is tied directly into the GPS signal coming into the truck.  Rather than a “dumb” cruise control that simply seeks to keep the truck at a particular speed, PCC watches the road ahead. It also makes decisions regarding braking and accelerating based on the upcoming ground topography.

Alongside this, the cruise control is also somewhat more flexible regarding permitted speeds, like a smart human driver would.  In a hilly area, for example, it will stop accelerating so hard on the upslope. Let momentum carry the truck, even if that sacrifices some speed.  Likewise, it won’t bother adding any gas on the downslope if gravity will add all the necessary power.

Plus, the system keeps getting smarter!  This latest software upgrade significantly improves the algorithms and routines. It calculates fuel use while in Predictive Cruise mode, making it run even more like a human driver would.  According to Kenworth, the latest revision can shave yet another percent or two off the gas usage while in cruise control – and that can really add up when you’re hauling loads through hundreds of miles of uneven terrain.

Best of all, Predictive Cruise Control is an available option on any T680 or T880 truck.

Official Kenworth Driver Academy Video Series

by jsarasota
Kenworth T880 Drivers

One of the reasons we love Kenworth is their willingness to innovate in the name of improving customer experience and satisfaction.  A Kenworth truck isn’t “just” a working vehicle. For many drivers, it’s their home away from home, and a place where they’ll spend many hours.

Their latest innovation might not seem like a big change, but it’s still a smart piece of outreach: their driver academy video series.  New owners or operators of a Kenworth T880 or Kenworth T680 can quickly get up to speed on the inner workings of their ride, with lively and fast-paced short videos.  Best of all, they’re totally free.

How the Driver Academy Video Series Makes Kenworth T880 Ownership Easier

No one likes reading the owner’s manual for a vehicle.  It goes into the glove compartment, and rarely comes out again unless the owner/operator needs to look up a specific component or other fact.

As trucks get more technically advanced, it becomes easier for drivers to overlook critical information because of this.  Whether it’s material they truly need for day-to-day operations or maintenance, there’s a lot buried in the manuals that rarely gets seen.

That’s where the Driver Academy Video series comes in.  These videos, only a couple minutes each, highlight key elements in owning and operating a Kenworth T880.  Topics include:

  • Switches, Cab Climate, and Gauges
  • Cab Comfort Systems
  • NAV+ HD Computer Operation
  • Under-Hood Bulb Replacement
  • And similar subjects.

These range from very basic all-around information, to critical information about systems which are specific to the T880 and other top-line Kenworth models.  They could be used as reference materials when a driver needs to understand a specific function or simply watched in order to gain a good operating knowledge of the truck in around half an hour.

Currently the videos are all available via Kenworth’s YouTube channel, and as a playlist which runs them sequentially.  There are playlists for both the T880 and T680, and videos for other models may become available in the future.  Additionally, Kenworth says that the videos will soon be integrated into their Kenworth Essentials smartphone app as well.

This all makes it easier than ever for drivers to get up to speed with their new Kenworth T880!

T680: One of the Top Choices in Class 8 Trucks

by jsarasota
Class 8 Trucks

October 20, 2017 – Coopersburg, PA

More and more drivers are discovering the many virtues of the T680 Kenworth. It is rapidly becoming one of the most popular vehicles around according to top retailers Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth.  When comfort, quality, and cost-savings come together in a Class 8 trucks, it’s no wonder it becomes a hit.

T680 Class 8 Trucks Design and Performance

Our goal with T680 is to create the most aerodynamic truck on the road, without any exceptions.  Every inch was computer-designed and wind tunnel-tested to reduce drag and, therefore, reduce fuel usage.  Lightweight components are utilized throughout (without sacrificing strength or safety), and a smart computer system helps advice the driver on fuel-efficient driving habits.

The result is a truck which can easily reduce on-road costs by 10% or more compared to similar Class 8 vehicles.

This is all done without compromising power.  High-quality PACCAR or Cummins engines ensure the T680 has all the power necessary to get the job done.  The entire truck shows off Kenworth’s reputation for quality from top to bottom, with every aspect engineered for maximum performance.

Drivers will appreciate it too, with its highly-ergonomic cabin and five separate cab styles.  From money-saving mid-roof sleepers to a luxurious 76″ high roof sleeper, there are options to fit every driver, style, and need.  With a T680 Kenworth, a driver might never need a hotel again.

If you’re curious about test-driving a T680 Kenworth, don’t hesitate to drop by Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth and experience it firsthand.

Avoid Risk When Buying Used Semi Trucks

by jsarasota
used semi-trucks

Whether buying to expand your fleet or for your own personal use, looking into used semi-trucks for sale can be an excellent cost-saving option.  A well-maintained used truck can still have many years and hundreds of thousands of miles left on it, while costing significantly less than a new model.

Of course, not all used semi-trucks for sale are as good as others.  Like all used vehicle purchases, you need to inspect the truck carefully for warning signs to reduce the risk you’re buying a lemon.  Our Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth team has put together a list of some of the most important things to check.

6 Things to Check When Looking for Used Semi-Trucks

1. The Vehicle’s Papers

Never, ever buy a used vehicle without doing a search through public records on its VIN to pull its traffic record and – if applicable – accident history.  Not only will this help you avoid buying a truck with an iffy past, it will also avoid any chance of inadvertently buying stolen goods!

2. Tire Condition

Tires will say a lot about how a truck was treated in general.  Are they worn-out or recently replaced?  Were they all replaced at the same time?  Are they all from the same brand?  If the tires have been treated well, there’s a very good chance the rest of the truck will be in good condition.

3. Rust

Be on the lookout for rust anywhere on the body, or even under the hood.  Not only does rust mean you’ll be in for some body work, but it’s a strong indicator that the previous owner wasn’t taking good care of it.

4. Door and Window Seals

Always check all the doors and windows to see how their seals are.  Poor seals will reduce the truck’s aerodynamic optimization, and lead to higher costs on the road – as well as interfering with your cabin temperature.

5. Lights

Be sure to start the truck up, and then visually verify that every light is working properly.  If they aren’t, it could indicate more serious electrical problems – or you could end up with a truck on the road which isn’t up to legal standards!

6. Mileage

Around 750,000 miles is when a well-made truck will probably need a major overhaul if it’s to keep running for heavy-duty work.  Now, sometimes you can get a great deal on a “fixer-upper,” but be aware if the mileage has climbed to high levels.

Invest in Tri-Axle Dump Trucks: Dos and Don’ts

by jsarasota
Tri-Axle Dump Trucks

Tri-axle dump trucks are one of the true workhorses of the modern working vehicle fleet.  They’re extremely multipurpose, and can be used in a wide variety of roles: hauling materials, paid deliveries, and waste removal.  Being able to choose between so many different dump truck configurations potentially expands their utility value, depending on the version chosen.

So if you’re looking to invest in dump trucks what are the best options?  While there are pros and cons to every dumper variation, we would say the best all-around choice would be tri-axle dump trucks.  While there’s no perfect dumper for every occasion, an investment into tri-axle dump trucks will certainly pay off.

Three Reasons to Buy Tri-Axle Dump Trucks

1. Super Maneuverability

It’s true that tri-axles may not be able to haul as much material as dumpers with four or more working axles, but there’s a major tradeoff there:  Dump trucks start losing maneuverability fast as axles get added.  If you’re anticipating sending your dumpers into construction sites, excavation digs, tight storage yards, or anywhere else where maneuverability is limited, a tri-axle is going to be the best choice.  It can get in and out of spaces a quad-axle couldn’t even think about tackling.

2. Life Axles Add Versatility

Most tri-axle dump trucks aren’t strictly three-axle designs.  The majority include a fourth unpowered “lift” axle, which is on hydraulic pumps and can be raised\lowered as needed.  Utilizing this fourth axle can substantially increase the legal carrying capacity of the dump truck, but without cutting significantly into its maneuverability.

Just be aware that different states have different laws regarding the use of lift axles on the road.  Some research will be needed if you’re taking your dump truck interstate.

3. Excellent In-State Use

Generally, if you’re going to go interstate, you’ll want a quad-axle dump truck anyway.  However, in our experience, that’s relatively rare.  The majority is used mostly for in-state work, and that means tri-axles are the best choice.  They’re relatively lightweight, have good cargo capacity, and can run around the state without any need to add a sleeper cab.

Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth has both New and Used Tri-Axle Dump Trucks

As one of the top truck dealers in the northeast, we usually have dozens of dump trucks available in a variety of configurations, both new and used.  No matter your budget and needs, we can put you in a great dump truck.  Come visit us to explore our selection for yourself!
