Invest in Tri-Axle Dump Trucks: Dos and Don’ts

by John Pospischil
Tri-Axle Dump Trucks

Tri-axle dump trucks are one of the true workhorses of the modern working vehicle fleet.  They’re extremely multipurpose, and can be used in a wide variety of roles: hauling materials, paid deliveries, and waste removal.  Being able to choose between so many different dump truck configurations potentially expands their utility value, depending on the version chosen.

So if you’re looking to invest in dump trucks what are the best options?  While there are pros and cons to every dumper variation, we would say the best all-around choice would be tri-axle dump trucks.  While there’s no perfect dumper for every occasion, an investment into tri-axle dump trucks will certainly pay off.

Three Reasons to Buy Tri-Axle Dump Trucks

1. Super Maneuverability

It’s true that tri-axles may not be able to haul as much material as dumpers with four or more working axles, but there’s a major tradeoff there:  Dump trucks start losing maneuverability fast as axles get added.  If you’re anticipating sending your dumpers into construction sites, excavation digs, tight storage yards, or anywhere else where maneuverability is limited, a tri-axle is going to be the best choice.  It can get in and out of spaces a quad-axle couldn’t even think about tackling.

2. Life Axles Add Versatility

Most tri-axle dump trucks aren’t strictly three-axle designs.  The majority include a fourth unpowered “lift” axle, which is on hydraulic pumps and can be raised\lowered as needed.  Utilizing this fourth axle can substantially increase the legal carrying capacity of the dump truck, but without cutting significantly into its maneuverability.

Just be aware that different states have different laws regarding the use of lift axles on the road.  Some research will be needed if you’re taking your dump truck interstate.

3. Excellent In-State Use

Generally, if you’re going to go interstate, you’ll want a quad-axle dump truck anyway.  However, in our experience, that’s relatively rare.  The majority is used mostly for in-state work, and that means tri-axles are the best choice.  They’re relatively lightweight, have good cargo capacity, and can run around the state without any need to add a sleeper cab.

7 Reasons to Invest In A Kenworth T680

by John Pospischil
Kenworth T680

If you’ve been paying attention to trucks on the road in the last few years, you’ve probably noticed that you’ve been seeing the Kenworth T680 more and more.  It’s no surprise!  This truck has been winning ‘best-in-class’ awards left and right, while delivering major benefits to the fleets which adopt it. Reduce your on-road expenses with the exceptional Class 8 truck from Kenworth T680. It’s the perfect solution for all your requirements. Below are 7 reasons to invest in one of our T680 Kenworth trucks.

7 Reasons A Kenworth T680 Is a Great Buy

1. Extreme Aerodynamics

Our engineers have meticulously designed and wind tunnel-tested every aspect of T680 to minimize drag and optimize performance. That doesn’t just make for a smoother drive, it reduces gas usage.

2. Lightweight Materials

The T680 is among the lightest Class 8 trucks on the road, particularly if it doesn’t have a large sleeper cab attached.  This further reduces gas consumption, as well as freeing up more weight for cargo.

3. Smart Computer Systems

The Kenworth T680 has one of the most advanced onboard computer systems on the market, watching over nearly every aspect of the truck’s performance.  If anything goes wrong, it immediately alerts the driver and\or their home office.

4. Predictive Cruise Control

Forget old-style static cruise systems!  The T680’s computer combines cruise control with GPS information to deliver a truly smart cruise function that auto-adjusts to changes in the road and minimizes extra fuel use.

5. Multiple Cab Options

There are five different caps available for the T680, ranging from a daycab to a huge 72″ sleeper that would be perfect for owner-operators.  Its mid-size options are particularly well-optimized, providing a comfortable environment without increasing weight\size too much.  It’s easy to fine-tune the cab based on usage.

6. “Gameified” Driver Feedback

Drivers in a T680 Kenworth are actively encouraged to drive well and make smart decisions regarding fuel consumption, thanks to a built-in system that offers “achievements” for driving performance.  It makes eco-driving fun.

7. Bottom Line: The Kenworth T680 Saves Money

The common thread here is that a T680 Kenworth is designed in all possible ways to reduce on-road costs.  Multiple tests have shown it can reduce costs by 10% or more compared to other Class 8s.

To see the Kenworth T680 in action, all you have to do is visit your nearby Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth location!

Five Mistakes to Avoid When Looking For Semi Trucks

by John Pospischil
Semi Trucks Common Issues

There’s never any shortage of semi-trucks for sale, particularly if you’re looking into both new and used options.  With so many varieties available, there’s a semi-truck for every possible usage scenario – but also a lot of pitfalls which a potential buyer might fall into.

Based on our own observations of truck sales here at Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth, we wanted to warn people about some of the most common mistakes we’ve seen or heard of.

Five Things to Stay Away from When Looking for Semi Trucks

1. Ignore Used Trucks

In a lot of cases, a used truck can be a much better investment than a new model!  Trucks from top manufacturers like Kenworth are built to last, and can easily rack up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road before needing major work, When the truck is lightly-used and has a verifiable service history, it’s often a legitimately good deal.

2. Buying a Used Vehicle without Pulling its History

Always investigate the history of a used truck by getting its records.  Contact your local DMV\DPS directly, if necessary, with its VIN.  A truck which has been involved in a major wreck, for example, will probably never be 100% again – at least not without very costly full-body overhaul.

3. Buying More Truck Than You Need

Always think hard about your usage scenarios before diving into all the available semi-trucks for sale.  Bigger is NOT always better, particularly considering that large or over-powered trucks are going to have significantly worse gas mileage.  Plan carefully and limit your purchase options accordingly.

4. Not Researching Local Road Laws

State laws governing semi-trucks can vary drastically, and you should be aware of those regs before purchasing.  For example, some states prohibit the use of lift axles while on the road, or charge extra fees for vehicles that use them.   Don’t buy a truck that’s going to cause trouble with local laws.

5. Trying to “Eyeball” a Truck’s Wear and Tear

When looking at semi-trucks for sale, it’s a good idea to bring along an expert – particularly if buying a used vehicle.  If you can afford to purchase a semi-truck, you can afford to pay for a few hours of a mechanic’s time ensuring it’s a good purchase.

3 Tips for Finding Reliable Used Kenworth Trucks for Sale

by John Pospischil
Reliable Used Kenworth Trucks

There are always people looking for reliable used Kenworth trucks, and for good reason. Kenworths have a reputation for having excellent build quality and long lifespans, meaning even a used Kenworth will probably still have many more years of use before it needs a major overhaul.

If, that is, it’s been well-treated by its previous owner. The danger when looking at used Kenworth trucks for sale is that there is hidden damage, or that the truck has been mistreated in a way which will shorten its overall life.

Here are a few tips from Coopersburg & Liberty Kenworth on how to find a reliable used Kenworth that will be a worthwhile investment:

3 Tips to Make a Great Buy When Looking At Reliable Used Kenworths

1. Visit authorized Kenworth dealers

Not to toot our own horn, but a genuine Kenworth dealer is going to be in the best position to know a great buy from a lemon, and to help buyers spot any potential issues with a used truck.  They’ll also have in-house facilities that let you make upgrades, changes, or repairs before you roll off the lot.  It’s usually the safest way to buy used Kenworths.

2. Get the vehicle history and, if possible, maintenance records

Never buy a used vehicle without collecting as much information as you can about its history.  If you’re buying from a dealer, they should be able to provide this upon request. (Be wary if they don’t!)  If necessary, you can also look the VIN up in your local DMV\DPS to find out if it’s been in any accidents.

And, of course, it’s rarely a good idea to buy a truck that’s been in a major accident, even if it looks OK.  There could easily be structural damage that turns into major problems later.

3. Look up prices online

Generally, Kenworths hold their value well – but of course, value will decrease over the years.  Plus, even Kenworth had the occasional off year.

Check the prices, and if they seem particularly low for a particular model, year, or mileage compared to comparable vehicles, it’s probably for a reason. You might also look up that particular model, to see if people are complaining about common issues.
